German technology company Siemens Healthineers is planning a major capital investment in Charlotte.
Siemens, a global provider of health-care equipment, solutions and services, disclosed plans today to invest $141 million into Atrium Health‘s Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte and innovation district known as “The Pearl.”
The investment is part of the company’s $150 million commitment to expand production, create jobs and better serve customers throughout the United States.
Atrium announced in July 2023 that Siemens would join The Pearl as a strategic partner, incorporating the technology company into its work with IRCAD North America. IRCAD, a France-based global surgical training center, has established its North American headquarters on the campus.
Part of that investment includes a 60,000-square-foot “experience center” that will be built at The Pearl. A Siemens representative declined to provide details about the project but said more information will be released at a later date.
North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein said in a statement today that Siemens’ investment is “the latest in a long line of companies that see the value of our well-trained workforce thanks to advanced health education programs in our state.”
Atrium Health was not available for comment today.
The $1.5 billion, 640,000-square-foot innovation district, modeled after Innovation Quarter in Winston-Salem, is on 20 acres at Baxter and South McDowell streets in midtown. It’s home to the city’s first four-year medical school – Wake Forest University is building a second campus of School of Medicine in Charlotte. The school anchors the Howard R. Levine Center for Education in the heart of the innovation district. It will seat its first class this summer.
